Empowering Traditions and Science: Coral Restoration at Heron Island

Heron Island, located within the traditional sea country of the Gooreng Gooreng, Gurang, Bailai, and Taribelang Bunda peoples, is home to one of the most extraordinary natural events in the ocean...the mass coral spawning. Once a year, under the light of the full moon, corals release millions of tiny eggs and sperm bundles into the water, a spectacle that marks the renewal of life beneath the waves.

I was determined to witness this event, the heartbeat of the reef, and to document the efforts of those fighting to protect it. The journey led me to the Heron Island Research Station, where I encountered the Indigenous Futures program—an initiative merging scientific innovation with the wisdom of Traditional Owners to restore the Great Barrier Reef. A project led by The great barrier reef foundation and the Australian institute of marine science.

Indigenous Futures: Bridging Knowledge and Action

Reef restoration is more than a scientific endeavor; it is an act of cultural and ecological resilience. The Indigenous Futures program empowers Traditional Owners with hands-on training in coral interventions, from larval reseeding to settlement monitoring. These techniques honor centuries of Indigenous stewardship while addressing modern environmental crises.

As I spent time with the AIMS team and Indigenous rangers, I saw firsthand how deeply connected they are to the reef—not just as researchers but as guardians. Their approach blends data with instinct, satellite tracking with ancestral knowledge. It is a powerful reminder that conservation is not just about preserving nature but about preserving relationships.

The program utilizes an innovative coral restoration technique involving ceramic settlement tiles. During coral spawning events, researchers and Traditional Owners work through long nights, carefully surveying the reef to collect floating coral eggs and sperm bundles. These are nurtured in controlled environments until they develop into larvae. The larvae are then placed onto specially designed ceramic tiles, which serve as artificial substrates that promote healthy attachment and growth. Once settled, these young corals are returned to the reef, enhancing their chances of survival and supporting reef recovery.

The Power of Interconnection

Coral reefs are the architects of life in the ocean. They shelter marine species, regulate coastal environments, and sustain human communities. Their survival is inseparable from our own.

Standing on the deck of the research boat, camera in hand, I was struck by the sheer magnitude of this interconnectedness. The Indigenous Futures program is more than a scientific project; it is a movement. It unites people from different backgrounds—biologists, divers, Indigenous leaders, and storytellers—toward a shared purpose. It reminded me that hope is not passive; it is something we build together.

A Personal Journey

This experience changed the way I see my work. Photography has always been my way of translating the ocean’s voice, but now I understand the responsibility that comes with it. Science and storytelling are not separate. They feed each other. Through the lens, I captured the hands of Traditional Owners restoring corals, the glow of spawning gametes floating toward an uncertain future, and the unwavering determination of people dedicating their lives to protecting this ecosystem.

These are the heroes behind. The heroes behind all the efforts that ensures our future with the reef. This and much more people on the background fighting for this to happen.

A Call to Hope and Action

Lately we are witnessing massive coral bleaching events around the globe. The climate change its real and striking us all. Especially for the ones living for, by, on and because of the reefs. They provide home for million species including humans.

This is another genius project like others, trying to mantain the life of the corals, using evrything we have in hand as humans to help the planet survive.

They were here for millions and millions of years but now we are witnessing how this essential living being is struggling to thrive.

They need our help, and you can make a difference. Reduce your carbon footprint by using less energy and choosing reef-safe sunscreen. Support conservation by volunteering for beach clean-ups or coral restoration projects. Donations to organizations like AIMS or adopting a coral can directly fund reef recovery efforts. Indigenous-led initiatives, like AIMS' Indigenous Futures program, combine traditional knowledge with science to restore reefs—supporting them means protecting both culture and nature. Every action, big or small, helps ensure a thriving ocean for future generations.

Traditional wisdom and scientific research are not opposing forces; together, they form a roadmap to resilience. The fight to save the reef is not just about the ocean—it’s about the people who depend on it, the cultures it sustains, and the future generations who deserve to experience its wonders.

The night of the Great Barrier Reef is something out of this world.

What I see every day in the water during daylight is already magical—but at night, it becomes something else entirely. A delicate dance between stillness and chaos. A world where everything seems to move on tiptoes or fall into deep sleep. As if the laws of the sea change with the light.

That night, everything felt suspended in time. The first creature to greet me was a strawberry squid, glowing in shifting colors like a galaxy compressed into one being. It was curious about my light, dancing gently around me, not fleeing but staying. For me, when an animal chooses to stay—when there is no harm, no invasion—it becomes a dream. A gift.

Below us, the corals were glowing.

But something felt different. Even when the light wasn’t hitting them, some shimmered quietly. Others, though, looked pale. Ghostly. White. That’s when I realized: we were diving during a bleaching event.

Coral bleaching happens when the water gets too warm. Corals get stressed and expel the tiny algae that live inside them. These algae are what give them color and energy. Without them, the coral turns white. Still alive, yes—but weak. Vulnerable.

Even in that state, the reef looked beautiful. But it wasn’t the kind of beauty we want. We don’t want white and blue emptiness. We want reds, greens, maroons, violets, yellows. We want healthy algae blooming and bringing more color, more life, more hope.

Because when the reef thrives, everything thrives. And when it suffers, the whole ocean holds its breath.

That night, even the turtles and sharks felt different. They roamed as if in a dream, almost sleepwalking through the dark in slow search of food. One of my favorite moments was inside a wreck, where they were just chilling, floating calmly like old captains of a sunken ship.

I had been using only the full moonlight, but at one point, I turned on my light and pointed it to the surface. The beam reflected back with a ripple effect, like when pool water dances on the walls. It illuminated the whole scene without disturbing the animals. It was pure magic.

And then came the moment that broke and healed my heart at once.

An eagle ray appeared. But not just any ray—a very special one. A year before, on my first day at Heron Island, I had met a ray with a badly damaged fin. It still moved fast, still danced, but I could feel its struggle. My heart ached. I felt powerless.

Now, one year later, I believe I saw her again. Same scars. Same playful moves. But this time, her fin looked stronger. She was healthier. She stayed with me for over an hour, showing off her beautiful patterns, her grace.

It reminded me that nature can recover—if we let it.

All of this, in just one night. So many feelings. So many stories.

The Great Barrier Reef is one of the most incredible places on Earth. But it’s also one of the most vulnerable. Climate change is warming the oceans, and with every degree, coral reefs are pushed closer to the edge.

This isn’t just about colors. It’s about life. Entire ecosystems depend on healthy reefs—turtles, fish, rays, even us.

What a Whale Can Teach Us About Being Human

📍 On board, somewhere in the Indian Ocean

It’s a daily ritual here in Mauritius, where im volunteering as a guide on a whale-watching boat. But what I witnessed every morning left me with more questions than answers. Every day a bunch of speed boats gets around to a somewhat called "The city". From 5 am to the afternoon. A tense, waiting room...

“WHALE!”

The loud shout broke the silence, followed by the roar of engines pushing the boats very fast, competing who gets there first and the splash of swimmers jumping into the water.

We weren’t the only boat around the sperm whales — there were twenty others, engines revving, boats zigzagging. Tourists screamed with excitement, all trying to get that perfect shot. We stayed back.

People were dropped into the water — but here’s the thing:
For what i saw, there was not even a second of hesitation on how the animal was behaving. Maybe they dont want to know. Maybe they dont empathize with them.

They were covered head to toe, like they didn’t want to be recognized.

What is that about? It was as if being in a militia group.

I then understood why... The whales got incredibly disturbed when swimmers went to the water. A peaceful moment for them, it should be. But what it was supposed to be a moment of resting after an exhausting 2000 metres dive, turned into a nightmare for them.

This created a lot of doubts around my head
Do they care about the whales they’re chasing? Do they know what they are chasing?

Where the Wild Still Breathes: The Biodiversity of Mauritius

There are few places in the world where the wild still breathes with such intensity. Mauritius, a small island in the Indian Ocean, holds one of the richest pockets of marine and coastal biodiversity on the planet.

Above the waves, you’ll see seabirds diving with precision, nesting on islets shaped by time. Below the surface, a dance of life... spinner dolphins, spotted, bottlenose, frasiers, short finned pilot whales, beaked whales, humpback whales, sharks, coral gardens and turtles gliding through seagrass meadows like ancient sentinels. An incredible array of marine animals.

And then, there are the whales. Sperm whales, in particular, don’t just migrate through here — they live here. Entire families — mothers, calves, aunties — call this deep blue trench home. They dive together, sleep side by side, and speak in clicks we are only just beginning to understand. Mauritius is one of the only places in the world where these whales are residents year-round.

This is not just beauty. It’s ecological magic.

But magic, as we know, can vanish if we don't protect it.

The Whales We’re Not Watching: Chaos Beneath the Surface

From where I stood, I saw it all unfold —
The chaos.
The speed.
The frenzy of boats surrounding the whales.

It’s dangerous.
And it’s happening despite the laws in place to protect these animals.

Swimming with sperm whales is illegal in Mauritius.
But every day, tourists ignore this and get too close.
And this rush — the race to get in the water — it’s just too much for these animals.

I see how everyday these animals are being incredibly uncomfortable with people wanting to be close to them.
Its a very biased feeling to have.

The people are now fanatized by being with them whereas before, this whales were suffering people hunting them... But on the other side of the coin, they are being treated as statues or monuments for photos. This are living beings that feel and need to have their space. Like us...

The whales try to swim away, their tails slapping the water. Some escape. Others don’t.

I often wonder:
What are we waiting for? Is it a tragedy to get our attention?

Mauritius Marine Conservation Organization (MMCO) is the oldest and only organization actively working to conserve these magnificent creatures.

They collect data, raise awareness, and advocate for stronger regulations to protect marine life.

The Harm We Don’t See

I’ve often found myself reflecting on how close we are to the edge. The ocean is full of life, from tiny fish to majestic whales, yet we constantly encroach on their space. Every day, whales dive, hunt, and breathe — but we race to get in the way.

What if the whale you just dropped next to was pregnant?
What if her tail wasn’t a playful flick but a desperate move to escape?
What if the stress from our actions is forcing them to leave?

We often treat these majestic animals as content — a once-in-a-lifetime experience for us.
But for the whale, it’s just another exhausting day of surviving human interference.

The Need for Ethical Tourism

So what can we do about it?
We’re not here to blame or destroy jobs — we’re here to educate and raise awareness.
The reality is, tourism is growing fast, and with that comes more boats, more noise, and more chaos for the animals. But it doesn't have to be this way.

In other places, governments and businesses have worked together to manage tourism responsibly —
they’ve established guidelines, created awareness programs, and enforced tourist regulations. Why not here?

Mauritius has a unique opportunity to lead by example. By protecting our most valuable asset — these whales — we can create a future where tourism and wildlife coexist harmoniously.

There are rules to follow, that are made for the sake of the well being of the animals.

Can We Protect What We Love?

Here’s the truth: If we don’t act soon, these whales might leave.

In the past, we’ve seen animals disappear from tourist hotspots.
What happens when they leave?
The tourism economy suffers.
The locals lose a vital resource.
The balance of nature tips further out of control.

But if we treat our ocean as a national treasure, with the same respect we’d give to our most valuable resources, we can ensure its survival.

We can create a better, more sustainable form of tourism that doesn’t harm the whales but instead nurtures them.

What You Can Do to Protect the Whales

So what can you do to make a difference? Here are some steps:

📢 Raise Awareness: Talk to others about the harm caused by illegal swimming with whales.

When the Ocean Roared Back: A Turning Point for Sperm Whales in Mauritius

Part 2 of the Wildest of them all

There was something electric in the air. Boats surrounded the spot—five nautical miles offshore, 2,000 meters deep. Helicopters hovered. Coast guard vessels surged in.

It felt less like whale watching, and more like a covert operation happening at sea.

And I was right there, watching history unfold.

Whales with Names, Not Hashtags

We were guiding a group on a whale safari when it happened. On board with me was my captain, a local man who once fished these waters and now protects them. With us were people who came to Mauritius seeking magic—the chance to glimpse Irene, Vanessa, Vaco, Lana, Chico, Pretty, Elliot.
These are not anonymous whales. They are individuals. They know these waters. They socialize. They love. They rest. They mate. They breathe deeply in their home.

And their home was being suffocated.

For too long, bad tourism practices harassed them daily. Tourists jumping on them. Boats driving fast across their paths. People blocking their breathing spaces. Each act seemed small. Together, it was deadly. Not by harpoon, but by stress.

This is how you kill a species slowly.

The law tries to talk

What the Law Says: Swimming with Whales is Illegal
Mauritius has had regulations in place since 2012 under the Tourism Authority (Dolphin and Whale Watching) Regulations. These are not suggestions. They are law:

Swimming with whales is strictly prohibited

Whale watching requires a licensed operator

Boats must remain 100–200 meters away from whales

Permits for close encounters are granted only for scientific or documentary purposes

As of late 2023, the government began active enforcement with fines, license removals, and nationwide awareness campaigns

Despite the rules, the practice continued for years. Too many turned a blind eye. Until that day.

A Coast Guard Operation Like No Other

On that morning, the ocean was buzzing. Helicopters hovered. Big boats sped toward us. The authorities were taking over. The law had arrived—visibly, audibly, and seriously.

At first, I was speechless. I watched from our boat, unsure how to explain what was happening to our guests. My camera shook slightly in my hands.

And then, the captain—who had once relied on the ocean for survival, who had chosen to leave whale swimming behind—spoke:
“This is good. This is very good.”

His words grounded me. I looked into his face and saw it—pride. Relief. Hope.

Hope that this would mark the beginning of something better. For the whales.

For the people. For the island.

This Isn’t About Closing Doors—It’s About Opening Better Ones
I’m not calling for the end of tourism. We are calling for respect.

We can still run tours. We can still tell stories. We can still inspire people. But we must do it with the whales, not at their expense.

This is not about shutting down the industry—it’s about giving it a future. A future built on conservation, storytelling, and connection. Not exploitation.

Let’s not wait until the whales are gone to understand their value.

A New Chapter for Mauritius and Its Whales

Following the situation up close, now the so called City is a town. Now, we see a lot of boats doing whale watching. A lot of boats that can still live of the whales but with respect. Now we can see a big difference, the whales are much more relaxed. They can have some time to breath and the people can enjoy the presence of this ancient and mystical creatures.

I don’t know what will happen next. Will every operator follow the rules? Will the coast guard keep showing up? Time will tell. But something shifted that day. The ocean roared back—and this time, we listened.

These whales aren’t here for our entertainment.
They’re not statues to tag on Instagram.
They’re not products.
They are living, breathing, sentient beings.
They deserve peace.

And now, finally, they’re starting to get it.

The Stranded Whale: Unite them

I got Adrien’s call at 9am... I know that if he is calling at this time on a day off, something is up.
"A stranded whale in Black river, see you there" please,no.

A pygmy sperm whale lay stranded on the wet sand of Black River Lagoon. My heart sank before I even reached the beach. Please, dont tell me its death

When I arrived, it felt like a funeral for someone we loved. The whale lay still, half buried in sand, its skin torn by coral. One eye was swollen shut. Please, breathe give us strenght...

The other eye... was wide open.yes!

It stared at me with total confusion. It was as if it was asking, “Why am I here? What happened? Its painful. I dont like this” I could feel its fear. That single gaze held every question and every plea. And me, trying to contain all the emotions so that i could focus more.

The First Responders

Coast guard officers Parmanand, Poongavanan, Felicité, Naidoo and Saddul were one of the first to arrive. They knelt beside the whale and gently poured seawater over its body. Their hands moved like they were giving a gift of life. Soon after, Albion Fisheries Centre; Adrien Joseph and Kitish Bersay from Adrien’s Dream; Alain Dubois and Pascal from DolSwim; Wilney Longflet and Tej Sumputh, who made the push-back operation possible; as well as Arvind Gopal, Ben Girot, and marine biologists Dr. Natacha Aguilar and Lana Barteneva-Vitry. Together we formed a circle of care around the whale.

I know how much pain was in all of our eyes, specially on Adrien and Natacha that i know them the most. But there was no time for feelings now.Adrien focused had identified which species was it and it did explain lots of stuff. A video was shown to us of the animal releasing a lot of liquid from its body when first encountered. At first sight, blood.
I cant accept that

At second sight and thanks to Natacha, a cetacean expert and Lana also a cetacean expert and very well known scientist protecting this animals with MMCO (Marine megafauna conservation organization) realizing about this, ink. A quick check showed this was a male pygmy sperm whale about 297 cm long and 175 cm wide.
They evolved in a way that if threatened by anything they release ink all around to confuse its predators. Incredible Please, survive i beg you

These small whales usually dive over 1 000 m to find squid. They hardly ever strand. When they do, few survive.

The First Push

The whale’s breaths were quick (a sign of stress). We were supposed to wait for the Fisheries Ministry. But none of us could watch it suffer. Biologists, coast guards, boat guides, fishermen and people on the beach gently rocked the whale back and forth until it loosened from the sand. Come on, come on boy get up.
Then, with every ounce of strength, we all heaved together. The whale began to slide toward a little deeper water. Its breathing eased. I looked into its open eye again and saw relief shining through.

Panic by the Rocks

Just as hope filled us, the whale panicked and darted toward sharp rocks. Our hearts twisted with fear. no, no, no...
Natacha and two coast guards plunged into the shallows and waved their arms to steer it away. Its echolocation clicked back to life. Those sound pictures let it find the safe path again.

The Final Rush

The channel was narrow and full of boats.
We are with you... you can do this.

Teams from DolSwim, Adrien’s Dream, MMCO and local whale‑watching operators formed a protective corridor. For over an hour we guided it gently, never letting it stray. Then the whale surged forward with a burst of power. Its tail flung water like a rocket. It raced past our boats, and start behaving very normal for a whale. Its breathing became calm and steady. I watched until it slipped beneath the waves and tears filled my eyes. Because i was watching this.

I was watching this local heroes getting together for saving the hell out of this whale.

A Letter to the Whale

To you, gentle soul:

you swam off to explore the hidden depths of Mauritius, the beautiful undersea world that surrounds this island. I hope no boat disturbs your path for many moons. I hope you flourish in these waters and live a long, happy life. I hope you never face such terror again. But if you do, know that you have us forever. You are protected by these amazing local ocean warriors and we will always be here to care for you.

🐢 The Life Cycle of Green Sea Turtles in the Great Barrier Reef

I spent time on Heron Island, a tiny coral cay in the heart of the Great Barrier Reef.
A place small on the map, but immense in meaning: chosen by ancient beings to continue their lineage.
I lived through a whole cycle there, surrounded by people who felt like disciples of nature.

Every time I thought about it, everything became magical.
It was like living inside a painting from another universe.

Birth

Just a few meters from where I slept, the sand held treasures.
Each nest, only half a meter deep, sheltered around one hundred eggs.
After forty-five to seventy days of incubation, under starlight, the hatchlings broke their shells and raced toward the ocean.

It was a scene both tender and harsh.
Only one in a thousand hatchlings will survive to adulthood.
Seagulls waited in the sky, crabs and sharks in the shallows.

Some made it into the water… and from that moment on, only the ocean holds their secrets.

The Lost Years

The early life of sea turtles is still largely a mystery.
Scientists call this stage the lost years.
They drift in the open ocean for decades, carried by currents, invisible to us.

What we do know is that they carry something extraordinary:
an internal magnetic compass.
Guided by Earth’s field, they can cross entire oceans and eventually return to the exact same beach where they were born.

The Return

When they come back as adults, their presence is imposing.
Most weigh between 110 and 180 kilograms, though some giants can exceed 250 kilograms.
In the water, they move with elegance, fluid and ethereal.
But on the sand, each step is heavy, every movement an effort.

During a single nesting season, a female can lay eggs up to ten times.
Every nest,forty to fifty centimeters deep,holds around one hundred eggs.
Everything is designed to give life another chance.

A Cycle at Risk

Today, climate change threatens to break this delicate cycle.
The sex of the hatchlings is determined by the temperature of the sand:

Below 29 °C → mostly males.
Above 29 °C → mostly females.

Now, on many nesting beaches, sand temperatures rise above 30 °C.
Entire generations risk becoming almost entirely female.
The survival of the species hangs in the balance.

And yet, they continue.
Dragging themselves across the sand, trusting the universe, repeating this cycle for millions of years.

Final Reflection

There are still gaps in our knowledge.
It is almost impossible to fully follow the ancestral rhythm of these animals.
But one thing is certain: green turtles are as beautiful as they are fragile.
And we must wake up before we lose them.

With the support of the Australian Marine Conservation Society, the University of Queensland on Heron Island, and my fellow wildlife addicts, I was able to live and document this story.

When We Protect, Nature Answers: Ocean Conservation After the High Seas Treaty

I found a buoy underwater. What was once just human debris was now covered in corals and full of life. Fish swam through it, corals had taken hold, and it had become a small ecosystem — a miniature planet Earth.

It showed me something simple but powerful: if we protect nature and give it space, even the smallest chance can turn damage into life.

A Thriving Reef in Réunion

This is a marine protected area in Réunion Island, a reef alive with corals, fish, and whales. Proof that when we protect, nature answers.

I saw it myself: corals thriving, fish weaving in and out of their underwater homes, whales surfacing on the horizon. Divers, freedivers, and ocean lovers all witnessing the same truth — when we give nature space, life flourishes.

Marine protected areas like this are more than local treasures. They are living case studies showing the world why global ocean protection matters.

The High Seas Treaty 2025: A Historic Step

In 2025, the High Seas Treaty was ratified, a historic milestone in ocean conservation. For the first time, nearly two thirds of the global ocean beyond national borders will have legal protection.

This treaty creates tools once thought impossible:
• The power to establish marine protected areas on the high seas
• Mandatory environmental impact assessments for deep sea mining, shipping, and industrial activities
• A framework to reach the global goal of protecting 30% of the ocean by 2030

The High Seas Treaty is being called the Paris Agreement for the Ocean. It is a turning point, the beginning of real accountability in international waters.

WTO Fisheries Subsidies Agreement: Less Money for Destruction

Almost at the same time, another critical milestone arrived. The WTO Agreement on Fisheries Subsidies finally entered into force after 20 years of negotiations.

This agreement bans governments from providing subsidies that fuel:
• Illegal, unreported, and unregulated (IUU) fishing
• Fishing on already overfished stocks

In simple terms: less money for destruction, more chances for the ocean to heal.

Together, the High Seas Treaty and the WTO agreement shift the balance. Protection over exploitation. Sustainability over short term gain.

Why I Waited to Share This

I did not write about these treaties immediately. At the same moment, a humanitarian flotilla was sailing, risking everything against ruin forces that treat human lives as disposable.

I did not want to distract from that.

But these stories are connected. Both are about saying no to a system that values profit over life whether it is the ocean, a community, or a child.

Lessons from Réunion Island

In Réunion Island, I found another kind of guardianship. The island’s marine protected areas attract divers, freedivers, and ocean lovers.

It is not the same as Indigenous communities of the Great Barrier Reef, who live from and with the reef. But here too, people live with the ocean, as culture, as identity, as daily rhythm.

When we were there, our investigation even made the local news. Everyone spoke about whales, looked for them, celebrated them. Every day, people were out enjoying the sea.

This spirit of celebration and care is the foundation of ocean conservation. It proves that when communities embrace the ocean, protection follows naturally.

One Fight, Many Fronts

Protecting the sea means protecting ourselves. Resisting destruction means choosing empathy over greed.

The High Seas Treaty 2025 and the WTO Fisheries Subsidies Agreement are reasons to celebrate, but they are only the beginning. Treaties on paper only work if communities demand enforcement, if countries commit to compliance, and if individuals make choices that respect the ocean.

Revolution of Life: Witnessing Coral Spawning on the Great Barrier Reef at Heron Island

I had long dreamed of witnessing it, the moment when the ancient heart of the ocean pulses in unison.

Arriving deliberately at Heron Island, on the southern edge of the Great Barrier Reef, I volunteered with the University of Queensland and surrendered comfort, time, and certainty just to be there. I was not going to miss the coral spawning.

This annual event, one of the rarest spectacles on Earth, happens only a few nights after the full moon in November. It demands everything: patience, endurance, and the kind of faith that keeps you awake each night, staring at the sea, ready to dive into the dark. You give up sleep, you give up convenience. And yet, you show up.

Because when it happens, it is nothing short of a revolution of life.

The Setup

I arrived ready for everything: the turtles nesting, the hatchlings racing to the sea, the birds returning home, the rays gliding through the shallows. But there was something in the air, something extraordinary.

In collaboration with the Australian Institute of Marine Science (AIMS), I documented part of the reef restoration initiative where scientists and Traditional Owner Rangers collect coral gametes during the mass spawning event, raise larvae in on-island pools, and later deploy them onto the reef in seeding devices. Supported by the Great Barrier Reef Foundation, this project, part of the AIMS Indigenous Futures program, empowers Indigenous Custodians to lead restoration on their sea country, merging modern science with ancestral knowledge.

I write this article with deep respect for the Indigenous Custodians of this land and sea country, whose relationship with these waters has lasted thousands of years. Their guardianship continues to protect these ecosystems that sustain life for all of us.

The Moment
It happened.

The same corals I had seen every day, some pale and almost lifeless, began to celebrate. All at once, the reef released its future. Clouds of pink, gold, and silver filled the water, rising like galaxies.

Eggs and sperm bundles floated together, colliding and drifting, life shooting into the current. The ocean turned into a living sky, glowing particles like stars, larvae swirling like fireworks. Even the animals seemed to know. Turtles paused, rays hovered, and the reef hummed with life.

It was a godlike moment. A celebration of existence itself.

The Reflection

My words will be short, because the wonders I witnessed defy description.

We are living in a time when entire ecosystems crumble before our eyes. When world leaders give up wildlife for profit. When hope and preservation are weakened by ruin.

There is urgency behind the awe. Corals are like communities, they need to stay connected to survive. But heat, pollution, and time are pulling them apart. The spaces between them grow wider, and with each gap, a little more of the reef’s future disappears.

But this moment, this coral spawning, is more ...
It is rebellion. A quiet uprising of life against extinction.
When the world forgets, the ocean remembers.
When leaders turn away, the reef keeps trying.

They have been here for millions of years, and still they rise from the rubble, cell by cell, light by light.
If we fail to change, we will vanish long before they do.

Because life doesn’t surrender, it adapts, it resists, it returns.
Even in the darkest waters, it glows.

The Night That Glowed — Canary Islands

On Halloween night, We dove into the Atlantic and met the ocean’s glowing heart.

Our underwater lights illuminating the whole scene. Plenty of little microorganisms of the black water.

It was Halloween night. While the world celebrated under noise, plastic and lights. We stepped into something quieter, the Atlantic Ocean after dark. The real mystery lives there, where light is alive and silence speaks.

Beside me was Marc , my mentor in this little but infinite world, a man who reads the ocean like a book, and Damian another ocean lover and tremendous photografer. Together we set out to explore a place that belongs not to people, but to the tides, the moon, and the bioluminescent plankton that turn darkness into a living galaxy.

There’s something both spooky and sacred about a night dive.
You surrender. You wait for the ocean to decide what to show you.

The sea was calm, almost flat. We swam hundreds of meters from shore, guided only by our lights and by instinct. Around us, pinpoints of light suspended like stars, plankton glowing with bioluminescence. Every movement of a fin created new constellations.

For more than two hours we floated through what felt like the sky turned upside down. The Atlantic currents bring travelers from distant worlds: transparent drifters, drifting embryos, delicate monsters. Some were no larger than a grain of sand, yet shone brighter than stars.

This time the Macro lens was not with me. At first, I regretted it. Then I realized the gift: to stop chasing details and see the bigger picture — the rhythm, the glow, the pulse of a living ocean.

We didn’t find the massive plankton bloom divers sometimes speak of, but the sea still provided intimate scenes of life: an octopus blended with volcanic rock like a folded thought; a larvae of a moray slid through the water column as if reading the shoreline; shrimp and crabs flashed like underwater punctuation marks. Sea slugs mating and showcasing ink and Needle fishes and balaos watching us dangerously. Amberjacks and beautiful polychaetes

When we were closer to the shore i had two moments that took my breath away.

First, a mantellina (Gymnura altavela) a ray the size of a dining table, lay motionless between stones, its patterned skin mapping the floor into quiet geometry. Incredible disguise

But after this jewel hidden, the highlight of them all.....

The Moment ...

The moment I had been waiting for without knowing it: a seahorse. My first ever. This time A Hippocampus algiricus

I have touched three oceans and crossed countless seas, but I had never seen one in the wild. There it was, small, patient, and impossibly composed, clinging. It felt that was just sliding through the sea floor just vibing you know?

It didn’t flee. It didn’t hide. It simply existed. Feeding slowly, turning its head like a tiny philosopher. In that instant I understood why seahorses capture the imagination: their defense is not speed or hiding, but an almost disarming beauty.

Inside my mask, I smiled, screamed and felt small in the best way. The ocean had offered me a private revelation, an intimate, almost sacred introduction to a creature I had only ever seen in books and dreams.

Coming Up

After two and a half hours we surfaced under a canopy of stars. The water was black glass. The island slept. We thanked the sea for its generosity.

These nocturnal animals, many living just beneath the sand near the shore, go unnoticed by most beachgoers. They are the architects of the night — fragile, vital, and often hidden by our daytime assumptions. Next time you walk along the coast, remember that the shore is more crowded than you think.

An Encounter Between Giants, Stories, and the Need to Care

Why Mauritius is a Marine Mammal Haven

🌊 First Contact

A lot of people talked to me about Mauritius. Videos, photos, stories. The blue water. The waterfall inside the sea. The colours on land. Corals everywhere. Turtles. Surreal landscapes. The Indian Ocean.

My first contact with it was a day that had all the weathers in one hour. A tremendous storm rolled over the southern beach just as a strong sun shone stubbornly through the clouds. A rainbow arched over me like a question. I stepped into the water and at that very moment, lightning struck the island illuminating everything, vibrating the air. That’s when I knew: something special awaited me here. And it did.

📡 A Mission Begins

I arrived in Mauritius to assist a conservation project on sperm whales. Natacha, a god of the ocean in my eyes, invited me to join a tagging campaign. This was my fifth time working on a project like this—everything began in the Canary Islands with beaked whales. But that’s a story for another day.

I didn’t know much about the biodiversity here. Then I had a meeting with two passionate leaders in Mauritian conservation and I started falling to pieces. I realized I was touching a paradise for animals. This island is a marine highway, home to 19 species of marine mammals, and two of them are the stars of the show.

Adrien, owner of a whale watching company, and Lana, a researcher who has studied cetacean behavior here, are both completely in love with this ocean and the lives it holds. Lana connected me with Adrien, and he—an awesome human who grew up with these animals—welcomed me aboard. Now I’m guiding tours on the boat, while collecting data for conservation. And I have to say: this place is surreal.

🌋 Why Here? Why So Many?

Mauritius is volcanic. That means underwater drop-offs—steep, dramatic, and deep. Some points plunge to 4000 meters. So you’ve got everything: coastal animals like spinner dolphins, spotted dolphins, Fraser’s dolphins, bottlenose... and then the deep divers.

🐋 The Sperm Whales: Giants of the Depth

Sperm whales aren’t just passing through—they live here. Mauritius is one of the few places on Earth where you can observe resident sperm whale pods year-round. These are families led by grandmothers, mothers, and daughters. They raise their calves in these waters. Males, once grown, roam the Indian Ocean but sometimes return to mate.

They dive well over 1000 meters, sometimes approaching 3000 meters, to hunt squid. They can hold their breath for up to 90 minutes. Their echolocation clicks are the loudest sound produced by any animal, capable of travelling vast distances underwater.

Sometimes I hear their clicks before I see them. Like sonar from a parallel world. Spending time with them reveals something deeper: they’re not just creatures, they’re a culture—a slow, wise, matrilineal society.

But their home is under pressure. Boat noise, chaotic tourism, pollution, and overfishing don’t just hurt their bodies—they disrupt their traditions, their ability to pass knowledge.

In fact, sperm whales are incredibly social, constantly clicking and codifying the world around them with sound. They develop unique dialects, passed down through generations—vocal traditions as rich as human languages. Studies show that when whale pods are separated or fragmented by human activity, their communication weakens, and their resilience fades.

⚫ The Pilot Whales: Ghosts of the Blue

Pilot whales aren’t everyday encounters—but when they arrive, it’s unforgettable. Mauritius is visited by short-finned pilot whales, usually moving in tight, bonded groups.

They're often mistaken for dolphins, but they’re actually part of the dolphin family—just larger, more mysterious. They travel in pods of 30, 40, 50. You hear them breathing in unison before you see them. Then they appear, surfacing all around you. The sea hushes. It feels sacred. They also as well on the hunt for sperm whale. For the first time in my life, i see this behaivour from Pilot whales

Their social bonds are deep, sometimes tragically so—when one strands, others often follow. Scientists still debate the causes: sonar interference, disorientation, magnetic shifts. But here, in the Indian Ocean, watching them glide in harmony, one thing is clear: they are as delicate as they are majestic.

🐦 Wings, Reefs, and the Ghosts of Coral

Birds here are like flying omens—white angels with yellow beaks and blue-ringed eyes. Noddies, shearwaters, terns. But the one that struck me most was the booby—elegant, big, unmistakably noble. I saw them glide, hunt, dive. Just being.

Then, the coral. Even as a major bleaching event affects the island—when corals stress, they go ghostly white—some patches still glow with impossible color. The Indian Ocean feels denser than others. Sometimes oily, nutrient-rich. If the reefs recover, this could be one of the most astonishing underwater sights anywhere.

Turtles? Not many. Resorts built on nesting grounds. Boats speeding through feeding areas. Not giving them the time or space they need. Even snorkeling feels dangerous sometimes, with so much traffic.

Sharks? All kinds. Haven’t seen one yet—but I’m going a little crazy searching for the oceanic whitetip. I just hope I’ll be able to tell you that story soon.

And the fishermen—let’s not forget them. Because the reef, in many ways, is their pantry. Their anchor. Their history. But it’s also fragile. Coral reefs protect the coastline, feed families, and support tourism. Yet they suffer from overfishing, warming waters, pollution, and reckless development.

🧭 A Fragile Paradise Worth Defending

This whole ecosystem—birds, coral, whales, turtles, fish, Java monkeys, humans—is interwoven and delicate. But it’s not doomed. We can help. We can demand slower boats. Responsible tourism. Reef protection. Science-backed policies.

Because once you’ve seen the eyes of a whale up close, or watched a booby dive with perfect precision, or heard a coral reef crackle with life—you can’t pretend it’s just scenery. It’s someone’s home.

And it could still be paradise.

Every Whale Counts: Tracking Mauritius’ Sperm Whale Families

The long‑awaited moment has arrived in Mauritius.
Although I came for this single mission, life showed me the island’s many faces and I savored every part of it. But now the focus is on the sperm whale tagging operation.

In the frame of the Quieter Western Indian Ocean project, together with Globice, Whale Conservation Society, the Spanish Research Council, Curtin University, Marine Megafauna Conservation Organisation (MMCO) and Adrien’s Dream, led by WCS (Wildlife Conservation Society) and funded by FFEM (Fonds Français pour l’Environnement Mondial) and partners we formed our team. Scientists, captains, photographers, volunteers… people brave enough to study these whales over time. Passionate about marine conservation and eager to devote their energy and time.
We work because these resident sperm whales are unique, and this project will deepen our understanding of their behavior to better protect them.

Introduction: Sperm Whales in Mauritius

Sperm whales (Physeter macrocephalus) are one of the few whale species to live year‑round off Mauritius, comprising a small resident local population of fewer than 30 individuals. They are categorized as vulnerable on the IUCN Red List, and their numbers remain low despite slow global growth.
MMCO’s Mission MAUBYDICK, active since 2013 (with studies from 2008), monitors this population through photo‑identification, genetic studies and tracking of sperm whales to assess population trends and identify critical habitats for conservation and marine spatial planning.

With only two dozen local whales, increasing human activity poses escalating threats — ship traffic, underwater noise pollution, and unauthorized tourism. Collecting behavioral data on sperm whales now is vital, before these Mauritian whales disappear.

Over the years, MMCO has identified more than 230 sperm whales, including both locals and visitors. The team knows every local whale by sight and has followed their lives closely from new births to old friendships. It’s like a big, underwater family album, built through years of patient research. This deep knowledge is essential when it comes to tagging. It helps scientists understand the different behavior patterns and personalities of each whale, making the data far more meaningful.
Local people are concerned about the whales and whale watching tour operators in Mauritius are afraid these animals are going to disappear from the region, losing their biggest asset but most importantly losing their lifelong friends.

Every whale counts.

A Deep Dive into the Sperm Whale World

Sperm whales are the largest toothed predators on Earth. They can dive to depths over 2000 meters and hold their breath for more than an hour. They use powerful echolocation clicks to hunt and communicate in a language we are only beginning to understand.
Their heads, which make up nearly one-third of their body length, house the spermaceti organ, a mysterious structure believed to aid in sound production. Females and calves live in stable matrilineal groups, while adult males roam alone and return occasionally to mate.
They live slowly. Socially. Wisely. And when they vanish from an area, they often don’t return.

Today, 25 sperm whales are here. Today we need to take care of them more than ever. Today, every whale counts.

Why Tag a Whale?

Tagging helps us understand whales. It gives us an insight into environments that we can only dream of.

In Mauritius, we are using a small, non-invasive device called a D-Tag. It gently attaches to the whale’s back with suction cups, staying on for a few hours before falling off on its own. No harm, no tracking chips, just data.

With this method, we can learn how deep they dive, how they move, and most importantly, how they use sound to communicate and navigate. It also helps us see how human activities — especially boat traffic — are affecting their daily lives.

By following their path through sound and depth, we can better protect them. Every tag gives us vital knowledge.

Every whale Counts.

The Tagging Technology

Our sperm whale tracking device is developed by Mark Johnson. It's a non‑invasive suction‑cup tag, built to attach gently to the whale’s skin without causing injury. It houses pressure and temperature sensors, accelerometers, magnetometers, hydrophones and VHF radio transmitters, all within a hydrodynamic design capable of withstanding dives to 3,000 metres — where light fades and whales spend most of their time, yet we know little about their behavior.

When the tagged whale surfaces, the tag emits a VHF signal. Recovering it is nerve‑wracking—these tags are unique in the world and irreplaceable. Only a few specialists know how to program and decode the captured data from deep diving whales.

Conservation Requires Collaboration

This isn’t a one-person job.

We coordinate with local ecotourism operators, marine biologists, NGOs, and scientists behind the tags who’ve spent decades refining them with respect at their core. Without trust and collaboration, there is no conservation.
We are here for the whales. Every sperm whale counts. We can't afford to lose them, so we gather the best that we can to protect them.

Natacha, from the Spanish Institute of Oceanography, a marine biologist with decades of experience protecting cetaceans, oversees the entire operation. She is the one handling the tags.
Vanessa, Lana, Paul, Noreen, Julian, Zbyscek and volunteers from MMCO and GLOBICE handle data collection, whale identification...
Adrien, a life‑long whale‑watching operator, provides the boat and navigational expertise. He and Lana have defended these whales for years, treating them like extended family.
Myself, Wildlife photografer and guide, i performed the tagging.

Volunteers support the land station, monitoring tag signals and ensuring recovery.

The Tagging Day

After months of planning, the day arrives. At 04:50 AM we head out to sea… no resting, no wasted hours. Every second counts.
Adrien deploys a hydrophone to detect the characteristic sperm whale clicks and codas. These vary with behavior—communication, foraging, socializing—but much remains secret.

As soon as Adrien hears whales, Moby Dick, our boat, navigates toward them before other boats arrive, to minimize disturbance and capture more pristine behavior.

Putting our ears below the surface, putting our brain in to the mercy of the ocean.

We spot a blow, a fountain of air and water. The team begins identifying individuals and planning the approach.

My tool: a 7‑metre pole fitted with a holder that grips the tag. Pressed against the whale’s body, the suction cups engage and release the tag. It’s an art: an art that demands to act in the exact second. The exact moment when the whale is at the right distance, not too early, not too late- finding thebalance between delicacy and strength. We need precision and care. Smooth tagging ensures minimal whale disturbance.

Irene, a large adult female, one of the matriarchs of the group… surfaced near me. She blew water onto the deck. And the rush was at its finest.
I have been seeing her for some months and she is kind of one of the queens around the family.
Personally a very dramatic feeling.

I have seen Irene on numerous time this last months. And most of the times she was harased by boats. I felt sad for her each time. I felt that we needed to do something to protecct her. I did not want to bother her, not even one single time but... we need it. Because every whale...

This is what happens every day with them, boats and people just hunting the perfect photo. Harasing them without empathy

Now, the moment...

Being a whale watching guide never prepared me for this. I had experience from different parts of the world, but now, behind me, was my greatest mentor of the ocean—Natacha.
But we knew that

There are not many second chances. Now the pole felt heavy. The balance? Shaky.

I’ve spent weeks preparing, years dreaming.

Since the first time I tried this, I’ve felt out of place… trying, learning, hoping to do better.

Now I’m here. The closest I’ll ever be. The most direct way I can protect them.

The hours. The doubts. The sacrifices. The hope.

And this moment stands on the edge… between preservation or disturbance, between meaning or regret.

I breathe in. I steady my hands.

I remember why I’m here.

Each whale counts.

Each whale counts.

Then, I felt the moment… Adrien left the whale on my side, Natacha gave the go, a perfect synchro: a soft tap but with the exact force, and the suction cups sealed.

She was tagged.

Relief and joy filled the boat.

We repeated this process with 9 other whales:

Darren, Hope, Irene, Zoe, Speedy, Emy, Germaine

Most did not react at all... The suction cups cannot be more gentle with these animal.

Tracking and Data Collection

From then on, we track from afar. Let the whale go, let natural behavior unfold amid Mauritius’s busy maritime environment.

Our land team keeps eyes on the VHF signal from a hilltop. If the boat loses sight, they guide us back. A tiny tag, but massive stakes. Every role is critical.

The results? Data from depths of 1,000 meters, revealing behavior we could never witness otherwise.

This information is crucial.

For protection. For science. For the whales.

Conclusion: A Shared Mission

What we did was extraordinary. A tiny device. A devoted team. A vulnerable whale community.

With science, collaboration, and courage, we strive to protect one of Mauritius’s most iconic marine species — the resident sperm whales, each with unique names, histories, and personalities.

Results that goes directly toward scientific research and part is available for whale watching companies. Very accurate information that will help the people that wants to do things right so they can showcase the beauty and uniqueness of this whales helping to conserve them.

Local NGOs and whale watching operators are fighting to take care of them and the tide is changing in favour of them. Inviting everyone to hop on, to hop on and take care of our fellow whales.

Im deeply concerned that the whales are being hunted for a picture, for likes and that just a few people empathize on them. This fanatism of swimming with them is going out of control and is very selfish to do it.

We need to remember that Every whale Counts.

The Ocean Is Never Silent

From the surface, the ocean can look calm. Quiet, even.

Below the waves, it’s anything but.

The sea is alive with sound — clicks, whistles, pulses, songs. This biological soundscape exists alongside geophonic sounds such as rain, thunder, earthquakes, or ice calving, and anthropogenic noise produced by human activity, including vessels, seismic airguns, and pile driving.

For whales and dolphins, sound isn’t background noise. It’s how they perceive their surroundings — how they connect, mate, hunt, travel, and survive.

Humans experience the world mainly through sight. Marine mammals experience it acoustically. Their perception of reality — their Umwelt — is built around sound.

To understand them, scientists have learned to listen.

That science is called bioacoustics.

What Is Bioacoustics?

Bioacoustics is the study of sound produced by living organisms.

In the ocean, it allows scientists to answer questions we can’t solve by sight alone:

Who is here?
How are they behaving?
Where do they travel?
How are human activities affecting them?

By listening beneath the surface, researchers uncover patterns of life hidden in darkness and depth.

A Day at Sea: Calm Water, Sharp Ears

A typical bioacoustic research day often begins quietly.

Calm seas. Gear laid out on deck. Conversations low.

Scientists prepare hydrophones — underwater microphones sensitive enough to detect faint sounds across long distances. Some are lowered from boats, others moored for months at a time, listening continuously or intermittently.

Sometimes researchers wear oversized headphones and listen together — partly for science, partly for the joy of hearing whales in real time. Most recordings are stored for detailed analysis back on land.

Hydrophones have become one of the most powerful tools in modern marine science.

When the Ocean Starts Talking

Once hydrophones are in the water, the soundscape comes alive.

Clicks — short, sharp bursts used by toothed whales for echolocation and hunting.

Whistles — melodic sounds used mainly for social communication.

Buzzes and burst-pulses — sounds linked to social interaction and foraging.

Low-frequency pulses and moans — deep sounds used by large baleen whales to communicate across distance.

Together, these sounds form a complex acoustic language scientists are still learning to interpret.

Listening While Watching

Bioacoustics doesn’t happen in isolation.

From the deck of a research vessel, scientists pair sound recordings with visual observations — a dive, a tail slap, a group forming or splitting.

Because sound travels far more efficiently in water than in air, whale calls can travel tens — sometimes hundreds — of kilometres, connecting individuals across vast stretches of ocean.

Every Species Has a Voice

Each species has its own vocal repertoire.

Humpback whales sing evolving songs passed between populations — a powerful example of animal culture.

Sounds include clicks, buzzes and low-frequency pulses used by cetaceans for communication, navigation and foraging.

Sperm whales produce powerful click sequences for deep-water foraging and social interaction, often organised into patterns known as codas.

Dolphins use clicks alongside unique signature whistles, allowing individuals to recognise one another.

A Noisier Ocean

Shipping, recreational boats, engines, seismic surveys, coastal construction, and sonar systems have dramatically increased underwater noise levels.

Much of this human-generated sound overlaps with the frequencies whales rely on, reducing communication range and forcing behavioural changes.

When Sound Changes Behaviour

Change diving or swimming behaviour
Modify calling patterns
Reduce social interactions
Avoid important habitats

In extreme cases, intense sound exposure has been linked to behavioural disruption and, in some contexts, strandings.

Turning Sound Into Science

Recordings are analysed using spectrograms, helping researchers identify species, detect behaviour, track seasonal presence, and map migration corridors.

This method, known as passive acoustic monitoring, is central to modern marine research.

Why Listening Matters

Light fades quickly underwater. Sound does not.

Sound travels roughly five times faster in water than in air.

As human noise reshapes the ocean soundscape, we are changing the environment whales evolved to depend on.

Listening to Protect

By listening, we learn where whales travel, how they connect, and how our presence shapes their world.

Protecting whales means protecting their soundscape.

Sometimes conservation doesn’t start with action.

It starts with listening.
